I have managed to ssh into the box as the login screen sits in the
condition I described.

On the surface it appears that bug 6331 should have left nwam and/or
gdm jammed up and in maintenance or offline mode. Yet I find them
both reported as `online':

  root # svcs|grep 'nwam\|gdm'
  online 8:00:28 svc:/network/physical:nwam
  online 8:00:52 svc:/application/graphical-login/gdm:default

I also found something in nwam log that might be a clue..

  [ Mar 3 08:00:25 Executing start method ("/lib/svc/method/net-nwam
start"). ]estarter:default'. svcprop: Couldn't find property group
  `system' for instance `svc:/system/svc/restarter:default'.

  [ Mar 3 08:00:25 Method "start" exited with status 0. ]

[ Mar 3 08:00:27 Stopping because all processes in service exited. ]

  [ Mar 3 08:00:27 Executing stop method ("/lib/svc/method/net-nwam
  stop"). ] ]

  [ Mar 3 08:00:27 Method "stop" exited with status 0. ]]

  [ Mar 3 08:00:28 Executing start method ("/lib/svc/method/net-nwam
start"). ] svcprop: Couldn't find property group `system' for
  instance `svc:/system/svc/restarter:default'. 0,0-1 All

  [ Mar 3 08:00:28 Method "start" exited with status 0. ] ifconfig:
rge0: interface not in appropriate state for command-nwam start"). ]
sh: line 1: /etc/nwam/ulp/check-conditions: not found

Does this mean it is a network problem?

I have 2 network adapters on board. Currently haven't setup rge0 but
it is plugged into a router. I'm using rtls0 device currently.

I'm about to reboot now after suggested edits.

But... using:
 startx /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session gnome-session
