no gconfd is running, and i have the same problem now with gedit. When i
type into the editor, i have to wait seconds before the characters are
echoed, and a truss on the process reveals the same "connection refused"
as realplayer or evince.
gconfd-2 is running, and dbus too:
sh-3.2# pstack 1840
1840:	gedit
  ceb01235 pollsys (8326970, b, 8047970, 0)
  ceaa6ce4 poll (8326970, b, 18f) + 4c
  ce06fec3 g_main_context_iterate (811e3a0, 1, 1, 80f2a90) + 397
  ce0704fc g_main_loop_run (83216e8) + 1b8
  ce35b05e gtk_main (8047b50, 8047a78, cebfc7e4, cea70c32, 29, ceb979bc)

  0807bdb6 _start (1, 8047bb8, 0, 8047bbe, 8047be8, 8047c04) + 7a

sh-3.2# ps -ef|grep dbu
     root 350 1 0 Mar 03 ? 0:01 /usr/lib/dbus-daemon
--system
    henry 718 1 0 Mar 03 ? 0:00 dbus-launch
--exit-with-session /usr/bin/gnome-session
    henry 719 1 0 Mar 03 ? 0:04 /usr/lib/dbus-daemon
--fork --print-pid 7 --print-address 10 --session

sh-3.2# ps -ef|grep gconf
    henry 730 1 0 Mar 03 ? 0:02 /usr/lib/gconfd-2

The only messages in /var/adm/messages are about serial:
Mar 5 08:46:55 delljm asy: [ID 267298 kern.notice] asy0: UART @ 3f8
scratch register: expected 0x5a, got 0xff
Mar 5 08:46:55 delljm asy: [ID 702181 kern.notice] Cannot identify UART
chip at 3f8
but that's another story (bug 5796)
