Strange. I installed a two new systems with ksh93 (the 2006-08-27
bits), and I can't get _either_ problem to happen anymore.

Our lab, unfortunately, has a sign-up system, so I don't always get
the same machine each time, and reinstalls are frequent. On the plus
side, root access isn't a problem with a throw-away system.

stderr and stdout.
