I get 3-5 with the high capacity battery. Heavy disk activity or 
graphics will drop it to half that though. The battery monitor from 
frkit works great.

Did you try the accelerated NVidia drivers? The "nv" Xorg drivers are 
hit-or-miss, I have better luck with "vesa" on Intel (though accelerated 
Intel drivers are coming Very Soon Now...)

I'm using that driver on two systems with Quadro NVS280 cards and also 
on the laptop with the GeForce Go 7400. All three work great, the only 
hacking I had to do was to enable TwinView on my dual head desktop. The 
native resolution is automatically detected on all systems.
