thanks for the tips!  the nvidia drivers did indeed clean up the display, but the marvell drivers only work in 32bit mode-- they wouldn't install on my 64bit system.

i'm having some trouble with gnome not working right on this community edition install (snv_46) i have another plain solaris express dvd (snv_44) that i'm going to back it out to and see if it does any better.
