apparently it will. no timeframe though as far as i'm aware.

you mean in software? most laptops have Fn key combos for that. on my
laptop, i set it to 8 (out of 9), then take the power supply out and
set it to whatever i want it to be (6 out of 9 as it happens). then
upon plugging power back in it goes back to 8, and so forth. only had
to set that once.

can't answer the question, but can confirm that here, too, with SXCE68,
mplayer won't do xv for the i945 chipset, even though xorg seems to
bring that up just fine. it's a tad weird. i run stuff i'd run in xv
via sdl instead. not as nice, but hey, fullscreen video at least.
