The following is a proposal for a Virtual Client Community on
opensolaris.org.

Name:
Virtual Client

Background:

Sun provides a family of layered software for virtual client computing.
Sun Ray Software (SRS), Sun Secure Global Desktop (SGD), and the Virtual
Device Access Kit (VDA) provide different solutions for secure virtual
Solaris, Linux, and/or Windows desktops to client devices. It is our
goal to provide some elements of this software to the Open Source
community to drive adoption.

Focus and Scope:

The scope of the community will be implementations, ideas, innovations,
and research around virtual client computing. This scope includes, but
is not limited to, such areas as core technologies, APIs, system
administration, application support code (agents), portlets, and test
frameworks.

Initial Contributions:

Sun Microsystems will initially contribute to the community elements of
the source code for Sun Ray Software and associated management
applications under the name "Virtual Client Software." This contribution
will start at the time of community formation with links to the Desktop
Manager client source, the SSMA Open Source release, and portlets for
SGD. We will also build a central communication locus for discussion and
support of desktop and virtual client computing through a discussion
group and links to existing users groups. Our plan is also to use these
forums to assist us in evaluating what elements of source and/or
technology to release next and our open source roadmap development.
