-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Project Overview:

I propose the creation of a project on opensolaris.org to bring to
the community "Solaris Media management Service", a general purpose
mounting service. The project will be known as SMMS. SMMS will provide
a next generation media manager for Sun's filesystems. This project is
being developed in conjunction with "Automated Data Manager" (ADM),
which provides archive services for Sun ZFS file systems. This product
is being designed and developed by Sun Microsystems Data Archive Group.

Project Description:

SMMS is Sun's implementation of the IEEE Media Management System (MMS).
SMMS will provide true removable media resource sharing between
applications (in this case, ADM). The tape library, drives and
cartridge resources are no longer host-centric.

Community Involvement:

By open sourcing SMMS software, we will enhance OpenSolaris as
a storage platform. Those that adopt OpenSolaris will benefit from an
open storage platform, while providing valuable feedback during
the development and deployment of these projects.
We plan to develop our initial release of SMMS in the
Open Source community, so we invite community feedback on our
designs in progress. We intend to make periodic code drops to
the project page for download by the community.

SMMS is being developed under CVS source control. Our long term
strategy will be to use Mercurial as a source control tool and make
the repository part of the open source project. This will allow the
community to comment on features and our code base as we work
through the design and development phases of SMMS and
allow for community contributions.
