William,

Thank you for approaching us. As you know, this is part of a
complicated issue. I have a few questions for you:

1. Does the change in question apply to an OpenSolaris consolidation,
or only to the distribution/not-yet-integrated project known as
Indiana (or the project known as Caiman)[0]? It appears from context
that it may be one of the latter.

2. Have you taken this matter up with the Community Groups sponsoring
the affected project(s)? If so, what was their response?

3. Before such a change is made to an OpenSolaris consolidation (if in
fact this is the intent), architectural review should be required by
the relevant C-team. If in fact this change is destined for a
consolidation, has that ARC review been completed?

If this is a legitimate conflict between 2 Groups over something that
has been or is about to be integrated into an OpenSolaris
consolidation, you've come to the right place. Otherwise, we are
probably not positioned to intervene at this time. Our agenda for
today's regular meeting is full, but we could schedule an additional
emergency meeting to hear your appeal if we can agree that it's
appropriate.

[0] I should note that our ability to intervene might be enhanced if
in fact a valid policy is adopted offering Community-wide endorsement
of a distribution based on one or more of these projects. This has
not happened, so I am inclined to doubt your assertion that this is a
"serious threat against the OpenSolaris community." Nevertheless,
from a practical perspective, I also recognise that Sun is actively
attempting to use its trademark rights to damage our ability to govern
ourselves in this area, and that may also enhance our ability to act.

Nothing in this message should be construed as an expression of the
OGB's official postiion.
