It was a case of me having missed specifying 
this in the case materials.

Basically, this case provides "offline" compression
if you will; compressing a file and mapping that file
via lofi are two separate steps.

If we were to provide read/write access to compressed
files, we'd essentially have to provide on-the-fly
compression. There doesn't seem to be a need to provide
such a facility.
