Bingo.

The point we have been focused on is the delta between
"old Solaris/Standards" and "this proposal"; we should be
as much concerned with the delta between "this proposal"
and "the way it is done by others in the Linux world".

My suggestion didn't take the latter into consideration.

If RedHat/Ubuntu does it in a particular way, we should
consider doing it in exactly the same way.  Being different
from Linux in these sorts of situations is a liability.
