Unless it's really reasonable and expected for third parties to link
against libast, I think that's very likely to be a mistake. We should
just fix the mistake ... but that's not this case.
Just because you've made a mistake in the past, though, doesn't mean
that you need to keep on repeating it. Improvement ought to be
possible, and in this case, "improvement" means not shipping yet
another unnecessary and confusing private reimplementation of standard
programming interfaces.
You can reinvent stdio if you want, though I can't really recommend it
as improving the existing one is a much better idea. However, nobody
else should need to care if you do.
