So, are all those other Perl deliveries on Solaris broken?  If so, is
there a bug filed against them so they can get fixed?

I'd rather have some intentional architecture here rather than a
collection of seemingly arbitrary decisions.  Asserting that there's
one right way to do this (which I _think_ you're doing by pointing at
the Debian documentation) goes only part way in that direction.
