I know; one the *stupidest* things they've ever done is to become *yet another* Linux door-to-door peddler (you can't buy their Xeon PC-bucket servers running Linux directly).
When they dropped IRIX, that was pretty much the last nail in their coffin. SGI might very well take the cake as being the most self destructive firm ever.
Anyways, I talked to a friend of mine who still works at SGI, and the issue is basically that to open up IRIX like Sun did, SGI would have to fork out millions of dollars, just like Sun did, since most of the IRIX is based on AT&T's System V code.
And since SGI is in such dire financial straights, that'll never happen. Besides, they don't have that kind of a vision; they've become yet another marginalized computer manufacturer.
