I really don't understand you.
You can still install in a console mode without X at all.

Hey, JDS is GNOME - it's just branding.

IIRC there's already KDE community around Solaris (see
http://solaris.kde.org) and another one here.
What's your problem with branding GNOME desktop as JDS?
It won't make it less or memory resource hungry.

Forget about CDE - it's not a future.
There're other lightweight X environments also available on Solaris.
Perhaps making them easier to deploy on Solaris should be considered.
