Well, to be slightly fair, although it's clearly a name that nobody likes, "Java Desktop System" wasn't originally a Solaris product at all-- it was a complete Linux distro based on SuSE, which was meant to be tailored towards Java developers.  I certainly remember the discussions that ensued about keeping the name when the Solaris version came along, given that the Solaris version isn't a "distro" as such, but I guess the thought of having to dream up yet another name meant the status quo won out :)
