Welcome, Brian.
I think the best way to start is to encourage your customers to get
directly involved with the project and become a part of the community.
That's what we are here for.
Your marketing contacts can follow this marketing list. And I understand
that there will be a full marketing community proposed soon, so there
will be ways of engaging with the OpenSolaris marketing community at
that time. Also, there's an education list on this page:
http://opensolaris.org/os/discussions/, so maybe your research
colleagues would find that helpful. And there are many other lists in
which the engineers at your customers can participate.
I completely agree about your statement about users. Remember, this
project is only two months old, so we are very much in our infancy. As
we grow and as more parts of Solaris are opened, I think we'll diversify
a great deal. Even now, some of the most active conversations are about
desktops. We'll get there ... :)
