Hi everyone,
I am from Argentina, so please, excuse my poor english. Just for a ilustrative purposes tells you what I use today a lot of GNU/linux servers in my business (like a twenty).
Well, I agree with ajuvaba user. I think Solaris really IS the most advanced O.S. on the planet right now, but (like a lot of the common people) I have no time to learn a complex O.S. starting from zero, more if this O.S. is not completelly friendly or appears exclusivelly dedicated to engineers (thats it my personnal impression). Its sound like what, by example, i know a very nice girl but she cames from Malasia and only talks in Malassian. She looks very very nice. But we no possibilities to talk easily (she´s only talk in malassian and I only talks in spanish). Results = no relationship is possible. (well, I say the "longterm relationship", not the "shortterm", you understand this).
And because the life is short, i come back with my previous Girl. She may be not be SO exciting like the Malassian´s girls, but at least I can talk with them without any major problem.
With Solaris I feel happens something like the above. This O.S. appears like a very strong and very well technical-related documented (the ip services manual is a 4000 pdf pages ooouuughhh). But again: my (our) life is short. I need a -I think this is possible- short road to introduces in the Solaris universe, maybe with a more friendly GUI -in my case- of ip services related, or maybe with manuals (or media presentations, or flash quickly guides, etc) designed to achieve this goals. Others may -surelly- need another type of help, but I dont know. I can only talk from my limited perspective. I am like a baby child of 4 years old in a new world: I can be a smart guy, but the learn time to learn a new O.S. can be a killing motive to returns me to my previous life (Other O.S., you understand).
Well, this sounds like a interest conflict, because the Sun main business estrategie is be the of teacher of thousands people. Nothing bad on this, but first, we need to REALLY atract people to the school and we need to make the travel to school was be a nice travel. It is impossible? wath is impossible?
The software is a not software problem. The software (especially the O.S. software) is a political problem. The problem is: more people using the O.S., more fast the O.S. can win the conflict. But the battle terrain is the mind of the people. The common people (not only the sysadmins). Simplify life to people, and we win the war.
All of us (or the most of us) we came from windoze, (she´s is like a woman plentyfull of defects, mistakes, and errors, and she´s inestable; but shes talks in easy mode and she´s not look so bad; and she IS really really friendly: enough for the most people haha -but not for me-.)
I personally stay in the "middle-road" now with gnu/linux. I see what may be (and only MAY BE) the light at the end of the tunnel (or the final destination in the roadmap) is Solaris (or OpenSolaris, whatever).
The GNU/Linux model got, in my particular vision of things, greatest positive things, like a better fiendship interfaces with the users, a very huge lot of compromised people to sustent and support it (this it is the major goal without doubt), and a strong internal software architecture, without a hundred of complex commands at console box.
The goal of linux is mainly the above.
But, in the other extreme, the linux business model is annarchic (así se dice?) and this annarchic structure cannot be solved at today by ANY distribution that I see. Linux does not have a unnified criticism of objectives, no roadmap (see Red Hat: they admits that was an error shutting down the Red Hat Desktop at 2003, Fedora now is trying to deal with a brand not well known like Red Hat), and as results: hundreds of distributions -see distrowatch.com- (ultra-segmentation of brands if you like) only can dispers efforts and THIS in my opinnion is a FATAL ERROR.
We dont need to be a world-disperssed group of terrorists if we knows we O.S. is the best of the best. We need to be a UNITED front of good people doing the right things.
The people needs to see ONLY one brand (not hundreds), what simplifies her lives. That leaves it peace of minds. Just it. Now, you (and we) can make some efforts to close the distance betwenn people and Solaris. And may be a good starting point roadmap can be to talk the same language that the common people. First: we must win the hearts, next the minds falling alone (and with time in our side) the world will be ours. ;-)
