Hi,

<
< None of these topics are guru type material, and they aren't supposed to
< be. I'll be honest, I get embaroused blogging stuff this basic out of
< fear that someone will think I'm dopey, but thats not whats important.

Actually I think one of the things we have to realise is that not
everyone is a kernel head, or even a coder, so basic posts are very,
very relevant. While reading about say cyclics [1] is very interesting
from my perspective, or that of anyone interested in kernel internals,
the average user is not going to have any need or want to understand the
topic in this detail. They do however care about understanding the
output of say netstat (yep its an idea for a post).

Its curious to look at the referers onto ones blog, in my case the
most commonly hit things are examples of using cdrecord, a work around
for an obp bug and a zones example.

None of these are very indepth, all of them can be a royal pain in
the butt the first time you try to solve them.

< Whats important is that we're seeing users pour into OpenSolaris, some
< are downloading, some are just looking, some are actively watching, etc,
< and what we don't want is for someone who's run Linux for 6 years to
< feel like a moron when they try out Solaris, they are just gonna tuck
< tail and run in many cases rather than ask for help. Providing plenty
< of groundwork for new and experienced users alike is, I think, an
< essential way of welcoming them into our home.
<

agreed. A comment that I have seen before is examples on how to
set up your box similar to one of the major distros. Personally I'm
not very fond of this idea, but I can understand exactly why people
would request such a thing (although the irony of the its easy to
change from windows to linux argument doesn't escape me ;) ).

It is a very, very cool and informative post though
