[osol-mktg] Cluetrain marketing, Linux Weekly News

Here's something I did yesterday with surprising results. This has to do
with exploring "cluetrain" ways of raising awareness -- in this case the
topics is the OpenSolaris Xen project.
In reaction to an article posted to Linux Weekly News yesterday morning,
I quickly whipped up a Xen "link roll" blog post (by mostly using a
google search bound to blogs.sun.com and rapid-fire tagging of the
results in del.icio.us via FireFox tab-browsing), and then linked to it
by posting a comment here:
http://lwn.net/Articles/171062/
It resulted in a surprisingly huge spike in both incoming traffic to
that blog post and off-site clicks to the sites it pointed to[1]. In
specific, 106 of the 411 non-direct incoming "visitors" to my blog
yesterday came by way of that comment, easily topping
opensolaris.org/os/blogs, which is normally the highest (by far)
referrer of incoming non-direct "visitors". The latter came in at about
80 yesterday.
Of course there are probably several factors contributing to this, but I
think its safe to say that compared to similar things I've done
(pointing people to opensolaris.org pages and opensolaris/Sun bloggers)
in other places over the last several months -- such as OSNews, a bunch
of industry analysts' and reporters' blogs/articles, and a bunch of
other UNIX/Linux bloggers' posts -- commenting on on lwn.net gets a lot
of attention.
