Interesting combination sata+ata. I have never seen that tried before.

Looks like you 40gb hdd is neither hd1 nor hd0. You can query grub
from this:
Boot from 40gb hdd and select the first grub entry
press 'e' to go to edit mode
Select the 'root (hd1,1,a)' line and press 'e' again
You will be in line editing mode.
Delete the '(hd1,1,a)' leaving only 'root'
Now press TAB twice and grub will list all the available devices
let me know what you see.
