Atul,
Do you have an ADSL modem or an ADSL router ? For Airtel, it
is "modems" which are installed by default for most users who
use Windoze. This device has a dialer and has a username and
password to negotiate the Airtel side of the connection. This
system does not work under *nix systems, to the best of my
knowledge.
I too have an Airtel broadband, but I am connected over a
router (ZyXEL Pestige 600), not a modem. This does not need
any username and password, since these two are fed into the
router during initial install. The username (rather complex)
is given by touchtel. You can only change the password, and
that too in the router itself. You need to telnet into the
router or use the http interface of the router at 192.168.1.1
for changing the configuration. I set my box up static under
this network on one of the ethernets. The second serves my
NAT. There is no "dialing" needed here. You are online as long
as the devices are on.
My guess is that yours is the Windows-only modem. You may need
to change to a router for *nix. You need to contact Airtel for
the change. Oh yes, the router works under Windows too, so no
hassels on a dual boot.
