GNome 2.18 has been released yesterday (http://www.gnome.org/start/2.18).
This is a minor progressive release. Desktop sharing being integrated into
GNome is one useful addition I see.
"Whats new in KDE" vis-a-vis the JDS/GNome can be considered.

If not part of this topic, please add "possible tweaks to make the desktop
faster to whatever extent possible".

Solaris Express on my system is quite slow. I had "assumed" it to be due to
the OS. One of these days after investigating further, I found it to be
primarily due to the JDS desktop. With some tweaks there were marginal
improvements but wasn't good enough. After trying out different
desktops/window makers, I have settled on lwm for resource intensive tasks
and JDS for general purpose usage. The difference in performance is *very*
visible.
