The Java-GNOME project (http://java-gnome.sf.net/) maintains GTK+ and
GNOME bindings for Java.

Sure Java does have AWT and Swing, but when you generate a GUI with
either of those, it won't really look consistent with the rest of your
desktop. Besides, GUI apps are more than just windows with widgets.
Creating GNOME applets or using Cairo's features requires you to use the
GTK+/GNOME library.

That besides, if you already know GTK+ and are shifting to Java to write
apps for Linux (or vice versa!) , Java-GNOME is the ideal choice.

Essentially, it just boils down to a matter of choice!
