Hi Folks,

Recently support for Common Internet Filesystem or CIFS was
introduced into OpenSolaris. This make seamless interoperability
with Windows servers and clients possible. That is OpenSolaris
now has kernel support for CIFS/SMB and can act both as a server
and a client.

As opposed to Samba this change is a very fundamental change
introduced into the OS at the kernel level. With support for a
variety of things like integrated support for Windows Credentials
which Samba does not yet support. Also since it is an in-kernel
implementation performance should also be much better.

There is a nice blog post by the CIFS architect:

Highly recommended reading. Good insights into how large and
complex projects evolve.

Regards,
Moinak.
