[ug-bosug] Solaris on most Dell hardware - works just fine

Folks:

(My apologies - I hit send by mistake instead of Save)

I read with interest this news article :
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0%2C1895%2C2216876%2C00.asp

I can myself confirm that Solaris 10 and SXCE/SXDE run just fine on
almost all the Dell hardware that I've tested these on.

The only exception has been a Dell Latitude D620 (with a 64 bit CPU -
different from the earlier D620s that had a 32 bit CPU).

For video, the NVDia drivers work just fine, and the server drivers
section at the Broadcom site has Network drivers for Solaris 10.

It's nice to hear of a formal support by Dell for Solaris 10 and for
Opensolaris - this means that one can now download well tested drivers
direct from the Dell website for Solaris-Ready hardware.

With this move, quite a few organizations would be OK with testing the
waters with Solaris/OpenSolaris. I've seen that open source is all
fine, but that we corporates prefer having a vendor whom we can "hold
responsible" when something goes wrong.

At Thoughtworks, I've played with OpenSolaris on the variety of
hardware that we have, and have even hosted a few Windows instances on
Xen (as early as build 66). But acceptance at the corporate level has
been cool simply because Solaris is not "Supported by Dell".
