[ug-bosug] Unable to access the web from SXDE 9/07

All,
I have a BSNL broadband connection at home, using one of those Huawei
ADSL modems. I have installed SXDE 9/07 on my laptop, configured a
static IP address (same as that used on WinXP installed on the same
laptop), DNS, the works. I am able to ping the DNS servers (61.1.96.69
and 61.1.96.71), but when I try to connect to the web using Firefox, FF
is not able to resolve the URL's. My home setting is a direct connection
to the Net without using a proxy server. I am at a loss as to what could
be the problem.
The strange thing is that the same configuration (as far as I can
remember) has been working, with the same SXDE version, until I
re-installed the laptop after a failed attempt to install SNV_79. It's
as though the ADSL modem is blocking outbound connection attempts if
they're coming from Solaris!
Has anyone got a similar home set-up that's working? Any thoughts about
settings I might have overlooked?
Thanks,
Zoram
