+1 to that. A VirtualBox-based Vista VM is noticibly faster than an
xVM based Vista VM. Also, I noticed (and this is confirmed in the
docs) that VirtualBox performs better with the AMD-V virtualization
extensions switched off! I believe this has to do with the overhead
that goes into setting up the contexts for these calls.

The fact that xVM needs these to virtualize non-hypervisor based VMs
is probably the reason for the discrepancy in speed between the two.

Has anyone tried VBox based FreeBSD as yet? I have just completed the
downloads for 7.0. Will give this a try over the weekend.

BTW: Many years ago, there was a project called FreeMWare - which was
intended to be an open-source replacement for VMWare. The project was
shelved unfortunately, but I remember reading a very interesting paper
on how VirtualBox/VMWare/et al. seem to approach the virtualization
problem. Will try and look around to see if I can find a reference.
