My GNOME is unresponsive upon login as well.
After clicking on the GNOME "start" menu ( I dont know what you call it.
"Sun Menu" )
There is typically a lot of harddisk activity , system becomes unresponsive
for 5 secs and then the menu shows up.
JDS is not good.
