I would like to hear about how to officially get it working under Solaris 10. Does it run out of the box on Solaris 10U5? As a software developer, I am mostly interested in using VirtualBox to run Linux so that I can run 'valgrind' on my software to find any memory indiscretions and leaks. Others may be more interested in running Microsoft Windows. > OpenSolaris 2008-05. In particular, will there be a clean "upgrade" (downgrade?) path to upgrade current OpenSolaris systems to Solaris 11 or will it require a fresh install to get back on the more conservative Solaris path once Solaris 11 is released? > Any interest in these or do you have any ideas for future topics. For example, last month there was an interesting overview of CMT hardware, but very little discussion of what needs to be done so that traditional applications can run well on it. In April, if you can believe that :-) The most important features of Solaris 10 5/08 are - resource caps for limiting CPU usage by non-global zones. This will allow you to oversubscribe CPU for your zones, but limit the amount of CPU consumed by any zone. Zone caps are expressed in 1/100's of a CPU (per cent). - x86 power management (Intel Speedstep and AMD PowerNow!) - platform support for some new server products - patch integration see http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4078/gbfdy?a=view and http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4078/apa-sparc-23587?a=view - Staroffice 8 - Flash Version 9 (so I can now follow yahoo sports gamecast) - Pidgin 2.0 for Internet Messaging - p7zip note: This is a big deal. You will notice that the DVD download is quite a bit smaller. For Live Upgrade users, you will have to install the p7zip package on your current BE or you will not be able to decompress the packages and they will fail to install on the ABE. - pgadmin III Some other things to note. - x86 memory requirements have been dropped to 386MB. This will allow installation on some small memory systems like laptops. - EOL announcements for CDE (so much for those small memory systems) - EOL announcement for Xsun (replaced by Xorg) And there are other things. Goto do docs.sun.com and see the "What's New in Solaris" document for more details. Bob From Bob.Netherton at Sun.COM Wed May 21 13:19:51 2008 From: Bob.Netherton at Sun.COM (Bob Netherton) Date: Wed, 21 May 2008 15:19:51 -0500 Subject: [ug-dfwosug] OpenSolaris 2008-05 available for download Message-ID: <1211401191.2268.88.camel@arrakis> OpenSolaris 2008-05, the long awaited distribution of the OpenSolaris project is now available for download. Well, it has been available for a couple of weeks, but this is the first I've had a chance to talk about it :-) Some things you will find in OpenSolaris 2008-05 - ZFS as a root filesystem. Now this is huge. The end of backoutpatch as we know it. Snapshot your root filesytem, apply a patch cluster or package update and if things go wrong, just boot back to the previous snapshot. - New packaging system. - New package repositories (see http://pkg.opensolaris.org) - Live CD plus installer - USB boot image (very cool!) Fedora isn't the only distribution that has this. Not that many of the Linux reviewers are going to notice. - Simplified installer - Root's home directory now /root (and also a role on the live CD) - Gnome 2.20 desktop (although some components unchanged from 2.18) And most important - support! I run it today in a VirtualBox VM (http://virtualbox.org). The latest version (1.6) includes guest extensions for Solaris - so we get scalable desktop, mouse integration. Beautiful stuff indeed. Now, I have it on relatively good authority that Solaris 10 will soon have ZFS root capability (install, boot, zoneroots). To get yourself ready for capability, I would recommend that you install OpenSolaris 2008-05 (or a recent Nevada build - you will have to roll your own boot pool until the installer is integrated) and see what this is all about. And meet our new friend beadm(1M). Does it run out of the > box on Solaris 10U5? I have it on very trusted authority (our good friend Keith Cantrell out of Austin) that it does work once you pull the missing library out of the nexenta opensolaris distribution. see http://unixsadm.blogspot.com/2008/02/virtualbox-on-solaris-virtualization.html for more info. But Keith and others report that this does in fact work. I'll try to get a LU to Solaris 10 5/08 to validate this, but I have 2 way cool blogs to finish first (using VBox as a V to P) and cloning virtual machines using ZFS and vbox. Bob
