to address the Nihon Sun User Group (NSUG) in Yoga last night:

Solaris Volume Manager. There were about 40 people there. I'll be 
presenting OpenSolaris in detail to the NSUG Symposium in late September.

Our topics for this meeting will include an update on some of the things 
that have gone into OpenSolaris in the last few builds and an

that folks had seen DTrace beforehand to get the most out of Ryan's talk.

Good news!  As part of Tech Days this year there will be an OpenSolaris
Day (half-day really) specifically designed for the community.  We'd
love to have community speakers at these events.  And it would be great
to have OpenSolaris User Group meetings around the same time, so that
some of the Tech Days speakers can participate in the user group meetings.

Here is the tentative agenda for each of the OpenSolaris Days, but if
someone in the community has a great talk you would like to give, we are

The Atlanta OpenSolaris User Group met last night and had a very good 
meeting.  We had about 15 people in attendance and a lot of good 
interaction.

This meeting, to me, is what a user group is about.  Rather than having 
lots of presentations and one-way communications, we had a wide ranging 
discussion about DTrace and how various people were using it.  George 
Wilson and Alok Aggarwal both talked about how they use DTrace, along 
with other tools, as they develop new features and fix old ones in 
OpenSolaris.

Also on the list of topics for round-table discussion were a number of 
the recent putbacks in Nevada and how cool they were.  And we had a good 
discussion around how to find information about Solaris & OpenSolaris 
for someone just coming to the world of Unix system administration from 
another platform.

Lots of good discussion.

Looking forward to our next meeting on Sept. 12, 7PM.  Ryan Matteson 
will share with us about the DTrace Toolkit.

I agree this is what a user group is about. We have a lot of interaction at 
our user group in silicon valley.

Glad that George is active, and helping the user group.

Excellent. DTrace is definitely one of our aces in the hole so to speak. ZFS 
also, but because it's so easy to use, it's less exciting (not less

I updated the user group leader page and put it into a grid (it used to 
be a list) with links to pages and lists:

Let me know if there are any errors or changes or additions, and I'll 
keep updating. You'll see the holes where info is left out. I'd like to 
add links to the leader names, too, by pointing to the profile pages for 
contact info. Next rev.

I think a grid like this is better to easily look at what groups have 
pages on the site, what groups have lists only, what groups have lists 
on opensolaris.org or lists Google or Yahoo. As the user group community 
grows, this will probably diversify even more than it is now, so one 
snapshot page is handy.

There are six groups that have hidden pages, so these are the groups 
that were requested but never got off the ground or haven't put up any 
content yet -- we ask groups to try to post some initial content, such 
as the names of leaders and locations, etc, so we don't have a lot of 
empty pages when groups first get going.

Also ... a reminder: When you have meetings and you want to post 
materials, don't forget to send your slides or audio/video or photos to 
Tim Foster or this ug-discuss list, and he'll put them on the preso page 
http://opensolaris.org/os/community/os_user_groups/os-presentations/ so 
we can all share materials. I see that many groups are posting within 
their own pages, which is good too. There's a lot of content now, so 
congratulations.

There have been several new groups added recently, so I put those in 
alphabetic order in the nav bar.

Maybe we should start thinking about re-freshing the content on the main 
ug community page http://opensolaris.org/os/community/os_user_groups/ 
For instance, I'd like to add a page to outline the process of getting a 
user group space on opensolaris.org. We discuss this on list, but it's 
not really documented anywhere in detail, so I'll do that this week.

We are excited to say that FROSUG (Front Range OpenSolaris User  
Group) turns
1 year old this month!  Time flies, doesn't it?

The first meeting of FROSUG was on August 11, 2005.  This is when we  
started it
all off with introducing everyone to what OpenSolaris really was.   
Since then we
have had lots of interesting meetings covering topics such as ZFS,  
DTrace and
Xen!  It has been great to get to know everyone over the last year  
and we want to
kick this year off right in hopes of seeing much more of you all.

In order to celebrate our birthday, we will be doing a couple things!

First, what's a birthday with out the cake!
    * We will be serving pizza, soft drinks and cake.
       Come get in on the action.

Second, it is all about you!
    * We want to talk to everyone about the topics that you all want  
to cover in
       the upcoming meetings.  What interests do you have and what would
       you like to hear about?
    * We would also like to hear about what ideas everyone has on how to
       continue taking FROSUG forward.

Third, get that laptop installed!
    * We will continue the InstallFest that we had in June!  If you

The Chinese name for Shanghai usergroup is: ?????   (it's already 
UTF-8 encoded in this email).

You are welcome. Not a problem at all. You may want to wait on your
announcement until Eric wakes up and gets you a list. He's in Chicago so
it's around midnight there right now. It's your call, though. I'm just
thinking that it would be good to have a list to tell people to sign up

Hi all,

We are excited to say that FROSUG (Front Range OpenSolaris User Group) turns
1 year old this month!  Time flies, doesn't it?

The first meeting of FROSUG was on August 11, 2005.  This is when we 
started it
all off with introducing everyone to what OpenSolaris really was.  Since 
then we
have had lots of interesting meetings covering topics such as ZFS, 
DTrace and
Xen!  It has been great to get to know everyone over the last year and 
we want to
kick this year off right in hopes of seeing much more of you all.

In order to celebrate our birthday, we will be doing a couple things!

First, what's a birthday with out the cake!
   * We will be serving pizza, soft drinks and cake.
      Come get in on the action.

Second, it is all about you!
   * We want to talk to everyone about the topics that you all want to 
cover in
      the upcoming meetings.  What interests do you have and what would
      you like to hear about?
   * We would also like to hear about what ideas everyone has on how to
      continue taking FROSUG forward.

Third, get that laptop installed!
   * We will continue the InstallFest that we had in June!  If you couldn't
      make it to that one...well now is your chance to get OpenSolaris 
installed!

Here are the details for this month's meeting:

When: Tuesday, August 29, 2006
Where: Sun Broomfield Campus
              Building #1 - Conference Center #1 & #2

Ok, let's start with some basic tools for you to use:

Edit instructions for the site are here:

Mail list: Eric Boutilier can set up a mail list for you.

What I suggest is that since the Seattle Tech Days event is just around 
the corner, you may want to just put up some basic contact info on your 
page with some pointers, etc. Have Eric set up your mail list, and then 
just talk to people at the conf about joining the group. Having the list 
in place is a nice tool to gather people together for conversations and 
meetings. Please try to not leave your page empty for too long, though, 
because we don't like to have a lot of empty spaces if possible. :)

OK.  I was looking at the other user group pages and was gonna fill in 
something before the BoF, but figured that I could put up too much until 
I found out what kind of local interest there is.
