While we can always rely on a few of our regulars to come through, it would be nice if we could have some other folk talk about what they are doing or things that they've found interesting. As such I'm asking for volunteers to present. Any empty slots at the time of the close will be filled by pressuring some of the regulars. If we can't get speakers, the meeting will be called off by the Friday before. The Details of the next meeting are: Location: Sun Solution Centre, Lvl 1 33 Berry St, North Sydney Date: Wednesday May 24 Time: 6:30pm Call for Speakers Closes: May 17 Please contact Alan.Hargeaves at Sun.COM or James.McPherson at Sun.COM if you would like to present. Our topic for this meeting will be Project BrandZ, which allows you to run Linux binaries in a Solaris zone unchanged. We'll talk about what BrandZ is, how to build it, and maybe demonstrate some interesting things that can be done with BrandZ. Arrive early for light refreshments provided by our sponsor, Matrix Resources (http://www.matrixresources.com). Please RSVP to kathy.chamberlain at sun.com so that we can have enough food on-hand. If you need directions, check our web page at http://opensolaris.org/os/community/os_user_groups/ug-atlosug . You can sign up to the ATLOSUG email list there as well. We've had some emails going around and some things have been proposed. It's time to prioritize those ideas and start working on them. There is a lot on this list and we may not be able to do all of it, but with volunteers, we can do more. I've included the lists and people who shown an interest in these activities. I've listed out what has been proposed so far. If you can't participate in the meetings, but would like to participate in email, you can do that. We'll keep this conversation going on the marketing alias. If you haven't subscribed, you should. Below is the initial list of things to be discussed. These are in no particular order. Proposed ideas: - banner ads on sun.com We've got these, so let's use them. Idea that has gotten the most traction so far is: C-O-D-E OpenSolaris is a 4-letter word We have the ability to do another one as well. These need to be prioritized and someone needs to drive the activity. - Worldwide user group meeting Have all of the existing (and any new ones that want to start up to participate) hold a meeting on June 14th. All attendees will receive a gift (t-shirt, stickers, laptop stickers, car electrostatic clings) and a webcast with "celebrity" will be created to be seen at those meetings. - DVDs vs CDs Create DVDs (or should it be CDs need to decide) of one or all of the distributions to send out to anyone who requests one for a period of time around the anniversary. Also make them available for shows, events, meetings, user groups, etc. - Pre-printed DVD/CDs We can make blank DVD/CDs that are pre-printed that can be sent out for anyone who wants them to distribute. Need to decide what these say on them (if we want to do them)? NOTE: Solaris Express is not redistributable, so can only be available through Sun. Need to know of any restrictions on the other distros. - T-shirts First anniversary t-shirts. Proposed design attached. We can send these to the user groups. Sending them out individually is cost prohibitive, but maybe we can figure out a way to make them available - our yahoo store or cafepress? How long are they relevant? Would we want to give them out at OSCon in August for example? - laptop stickers These have been requested in the past and I know that there are plenty of people who would like to stick an OpenSolaris sticker on their laptop. We could send these to the user groups as part of the gift pack and we can make them available on the store. I would recommend that these be more generic and not specifically one year. - Electostatic clings In case you are unfamiliar, these are non-stickers that cling to the inside of your car window and peal off easily. You can show your enthusiasm while you drive around in traffic. - Install guides We've talked about creating easy to use install guides for newbies and getting them out on the site and linked to from blogs. Maybe the install guides could include a screencast to help people get there more quickly. - Blogs So many people blogged on Opening Day. If people would also blog on the anniversary and talk about their experiences this first year, it would be great for the project. - Web site update The tshirt art is available and could be used on the web site if people like it (that goes for the shirt too). We've also been working on updating content like the FAQs. I'm sure there are other things as well. We'd need a rep from the web team to join us in our calls. Other activities: - Update of our field communications (explain) This is a very Sun focused activity aimed at our sales force, but you can have input on the content if you want. - Single slide showing one year snapshot (available on site) We have some pretty impressive stats about this community as you know. Well we need to provide people at Sun with a slide that they can insert into a deck that shows that. That slide can be made available on the site for anyone who wants to add that data to their deck. - PR outreach Possible stories include "switch stories" from those that have switched to Solaris because of OpenSolaris and reinforcement of open source messages - we are open source you morons. Meeting times: To accommodate our disparate locations, these are all morning slots. I'll send around dial-in information and agenda when we a time. We'll start meeting next week. Proposed days and times: 9am PT Tuesdays 7am PT Thursdays 9am PT Fridays From stevel at sun.com Tue May 2 14:47:38 2006 From: stevel at sun.com (Stephen Lau) Date: Tue, 02 May 2006 14:47:38 -0700 Subject: [ug-discuss] Re: OpenSolaris Anniversary activities In-Reply-To: <4457BD07.4020301@sun.com> References: <4457BD07.4020301@sun.com> Message-ID: <4457D37A.1030102@sun.com> Sara Dornsife wrote: > Meeting times: > To accommodate our disparate locations, these are all morning slots. > I'll send around dial-in information and agenda when we a time. Looking at it some more-- it would be nice to see what it would look like on a black shirt. I wonder if the code should form the "1" without any other deliniation? I don't think I was clear enough-- what precisely will the Tshirt look like if it is on a black background? How will the "1" be delineated? It's clearly not the right wordmark. In our wordmark, the i doesn't have a "dot" in it and the "l" doesn't ascend. Just do a visual comparison and you will see. > What code should it be? Changing it would change all of the buttons.... Oh that's good news for me, as I can't do Wednesdays! :-) I was getting a little worried there at the prospect of all meetings being on Wednesday. Dave Hagerty, our presenter this month, will take you through the steps to set up OpenSolaris on your laptop or home system in a dual boot environment. Using open source tools, he will show how to archive the original OS, repartition the hard drive, and install OpenSolaris on the newly created disk partition. The result is a system with your original OS on one partition and OpenSolaris on the other. Additionally, for those of you interested in application development on OpenSolaris, Dave will show you how to install the Sun Studio Development tools and give you an overview. These tools provide high-performance, optimizing C, C++, and Fortran compilers for the the SPARC and x86/x64 platforms, plus command-line tools and a NetBeans-based Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for application performance analysis and debugging of mixed source language applications. Multi-platform support, compatible with gcc, Visual C++, C99, OpenMP, and Fortran 2003. Dave Hagerty has a Bachelor degree from the University of Colorado in Computer Science. He has been in the computer industry for 23 years in various roles including system administrator, network administrator, software developer and technical support person. He currently works as the build master and system administrator for the Performance Library (Perflib) group, which is part of Sun Studio. Here are meeting details: * Presenter: Dave Hagerty * Topic: Installing OpenSolaris and Sun Studio Development Tools * Where: Conference Center, Bldg #1 - Sun Broomfield Campus o 500 Eldorado Blvd. Broomfield, CO 80021 * When: Tuesday, May 23, 2006 * Time: 5:30-7:30pm Please RSVP by sending your first and last name to frosug-rsvp(AT)opensolaris(DOT)org by May 23rd. The UUASC has been non-denominational, and that helps to get the Solaris message out wider by taking possible Solaris content and rolling it in to that group. However, there are some pretty core things we've never covered (i.e. building, patching, modifying something, BFUs, etc.). Ironically, a number of Solaris developers in the El Segundo office. Some of those folks have decades of Unix experience on x86 hardware and with Solaris. It'd be good to leverage it. Having said all of that, I just never got around to taking the time to do all of the upfront stuff needed to get a UG going. What do you think of getting a mailing list and a web page going, getting interested parties to join the mailing list then perhaps put on a couple of programs and see if we can get a regular group going from there? I can definitely sponsor the space in the El Segundo, Irvine or Universal City Sun offices. El Segundo and Irvine, in that order, have the best facilities. Message-ID: <1147427347.18602.20.camel@haiiro> Hey Folks, Sara mentioned yesterday that Martin was looking for a nicer, more cuddly user-groups talks and presentation page.[1] http://opensolaris.org/os/community/os_user_groups/os-presentations/ Without a wodge of server-side support, allowing you to search/sort/categorise the content nicely, this could be tricky. (and I believe getting support from the server folks at the moment is probably going to be like pulling teeth - they're a tad busy) So, I was thinking about stuff we could do *without* going to the server. Two ideas: (and I'll probably implement both of them, if nobody has any objections) a) Upgrade the table to the modern era - use a bit of Javascript to allow us to sort the table via columns. Eg. http://www.frequency-decoder.com/demo/table-sort/ b) Add a column of keywords : this would be a keyword on the main topic of the talk (and hence sortable by the above) Another idea would be to drop a Google "Search this site" box on the page, but I'm not sure if favouring one search engine company over the others is a terribly nice thing to do. Does anyone else have other thoughts - I'll happily be the code monkey here, so if there's been anything bugging you about that list or you have ideas on how it could be improved, just let me know. There's no timescale here, I'll just update it when I get a chance. cheers, tim [1] btw. sorry I missed the last mktg con-call Bad timezone calculations on my behalf. -- Tim Foster, Sun Microsystems Inc, Operating Platforms Group Engineering Operations http://blogs.sun.com/timf From bmoos at rydek.com Fri May 12 11:46:55 2006 From: bmoos at rydek.com (Barbara J. Details can be found at http://opensolaris.org/os/community/os_user_groups/sosug/nextmeeting/ We're still finalising the second speaker, but the kind of thing that Nathan is going to be doing with a T1000 looks really cool. As a teaser, we've been playing with running the sunray software on this while doing all kinds of things to it that it was not designed for and watching how this impacts (or doesn't impact) interactive performance. We hope to have a unit along with a couple of sunrays to demo this stuff. Nathan will definitely be presenting a a look at this box from an unusual viewpoint. I'm also looking at providing time for anyone who is doing anything that they believe is interesting, cool, whatever to spend a couple of minutes to be able to tlak about it. I hope to have the full agenda ready by Friday at which time I'll post it to the lists. alan. -- Alan Hargreaves - http://blogs.sun.com/tpenta Staff Engineer (Kernel/VOSJEC/Performance) Product Technical Support (APAC) Sun Microsystems I went in the World's Greatest shave for Leukaemia. Right, that's what I was hoping to add with the keywords - want to see all DTrace talks ? Just click the sort by keyword column, and scroll down to the DTrace section. > I mean, who is interested when the talk was given and where, it probably > makes sense to just distinguiss the topic, and the presenter, so just > reorganizing the table into several smaller tables that are topic > oriented (alphabetically sorted) could do it for the moment... Personally, I like seeing the activity ordered by date, I'm old-fashioned enough to think that it gives a sense of "what's going on at the moment" in opensolaris-ug-land. But I do also understand that it's useful to be able to jump right to the topic you're interested in. I'd love a server-side component that allows us to filter the list by a topic (like seeing a view of a db table), but that's not going to happen in the short term - there's bigger fish to fry at the moment. cheers, tim -- Tim Foster, Sun Microsystems Inc, Operating Platforms Group Engineering Operations http://blogs.sun.com/timf From chris.steinke at caltech.edu Wed May 17 09:13:45 2006 From: chris.steinke at caltech.edu (Chris Steinke) Date: Wed, 17 May 2006 09:13:45 PDT Subject: [ug-discuss] Re: LAOSUG or SOCALOSUG? This talk will look at Niagara from a different perspective; That of someone who is more accustomed to working on the much larger enterprise systems. We'll look at some of the strongest and weakest points of the architecture, have a poke at one of the boxes in real life and discuss why optimisation can have such a positive impact on these (and other) systems. I'll try to avoid spending too much time on the usual 'coolthreads/power/coolness/reduced AC/reduced space' ranting... We all know how well these boxes stack up... Next Meeting: Installing OpenSolaris and Sun Studio Development Tools If you have wanted to install OpenSolaris but haven't wanted to risk losing your current operating system, then this month's meeting is for you. I like it. Okydoke - thanks, I've updated the main presentations page then. I'll try to get as much more content on it as possible. [ thanks for the pointers Milan! ] On opensolaris-mktg, Stephen Potter suggested it might be good to have a form to automatically submit entries for the table to me (or a bunch of Tim-like editors :-) which is something else that might be worth looking into... More at some stage, but for now, I'm glad you like the page! cheers, tim -- Tim Foster, Sun Microsystems Inc, Operating Platforms Group Engineering Operations http://blogs.sun.com/timf From M.Cerveny at iol.cz Tue May 23 13:13:42 2006 From: M.Cerveny at iol.cz (Martin Cerveny) Date: Tue, 23 May 2006 13:13:42 PDT Subject: [ug-discuss] Re: Re: Improvements to the user group talks & presentations page ?
