Message-ID: <2A010213-F228-4B9D-8353-B5FC86EF7DD6@elemental.org> Well, how about it? Anyone here from that baltwash corridor who would be interested in such a group? I work at UMBC.edu just outside of Baltimore and as a result have access to lecture halls and the like. There are Sun offices in Columbia (MD) and Arlington (VA) as well. Baltimore may be a bit of a drive for people in DC proper or northern Virginia, so perhaps meetings could alternate between the two geographic locales if a venue could be found around DC. /dale From Martin.Man at Sun.COM Tue Oct 10 01:34:11 2006 From: Martin.Man at Sun.COM (Martin Man) Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2006 10:34:11 +0200 Subject: [ug-discuss] Xen BootCamp, aka CZOSUG#11 Message-ID: <452B5B03.1090005@sun.com> Hi all, Czech OpenSolaris[1] User Group is proud to invite you for its eleventh meeting (this time an all-day event), focused on operating systems virtualization technologies, namely Xen[2] running on OpenSolaris. During the seven presentations, tutorials, and discussion forums you will have a chance to get to know Xen, its features on supported platforms, and we will not miss examples and experience from real world usage. This meeting is for developers, administrators, and last but not least for enthusiasts using Xen (or other virtualization technologies), looking forward to learn something new and share their experience with others. Hardware with preinstalled combinations of dom0/domU will be available for those who want to play, and a lot of skillful specialists will assist you with Xen installation on your own hardware. We are proud to invite (among other experienced speakers) Michal ?vamberg from the University of West Bohemia, one of the Unix admins, who spends a lot of time with Xen every day, and also Johannes Schindelin, one of the key developers and contributors of QEMU[3] project. The meeting will take place from 10am, Saturday October 21st, at the FEL ?VUT, Prague 2, Karlovo N?m?st? 13, aula K1. Our presenter is Bill Knoche. He will be speaking on the topic of "Porting Linux Applications to Solaris". In addition to the main presentation, Jon Bowman will be giving the "OpenSolaris Update" - a short presentation about the latest happenings in OpenSolaris. We hope to make the "OpenSolaris Update" a regular occurrence at the FROUSG meetings in order to help people stay up to date on what is happening in the OpenSolaris community. Information about the "Porting Linux Applications to Solaris" presentation and our presenter: This presentation will cover some of the features in Solaris 10 and beyond that make it easier to port applications to Solaris. Along with that, Bill will cover the different aspects of application porting. For example, how to determine the scope and do an analysis of the work, how to do the actual port and identify some of the issues (and their resolution) that one may run into, how to test the application and finally, how to support the work into the future. Lastly, lets not forget that there are already a bunch of applications that already run on Solaris so... Bill will also cover the different resources that you can use in order to find open source applications that are already supported! Bill Knoche has been with Sun for over 19 years. He has worked in almost every business unit and in a wide range of roles. Currently, he is a staff engineer in the I/O Technologies group in Market Development Engineering where they run a certification program called Solaris Ready which provides assistance to IHVs (Independent Hardware Vendors) with Solaris and Sun platforms. ----- Meeting Details: Topic: Porting Linux Applications to Solaris Presenter: Bill Knoche When: Tuesday, October 24, 2006 Time: 6:30pm - 8:30pm Where: Sun Broomfield Campus Building 1 - Conference Center 500 Eldorado Blvd. Broomfield, CO 80021 Pizza and soft drinks will be served at the beginning of the meeting. Please RSVP to lisa(dot)week(at)sun(dot)com in order to help us plan for food! We hope to see you there! We had around thirty people in the meeting room, approx. half of them never visited any CZOSUG meeting, and more than half of them never played with Xen. Frank Hofmann from Sun started with very extensive talk about virtualization technologies, he touched topics like LDOM, Zones, VMWare, and outlined basic principles of Xen, funtionality of the hypervisor, and virtualization of the access to the physical devices. Jirka ?ervenka from Sun continued with the history of Xen development, its versions and their features. After the lunch, the show continued with very nice presentation of the real usage of Xen at the Univeristy of West Bohemia, Pilsen. Michal ?vamberg described their setup involving Debian+Xen+FAI, and demonstrated fully automated network installation of Xen virtual machine, that has been afterwards migrated among various physical servers. All this from a single SSH shell promt connected from Prague to Pilsen. Milan Ju??k later filled the gap by enumerating all remaining Xen commands and demonstrating them. Marek Pa?ovsk? shared his experience with Xen usage in real-world environment of webhosting company. Milan V?clav?k from Czech Technical University, Prague shared his experience with Xen usage in student computer labs, where students can experiment with full root access. Johannes Schindelin, one of the developers of QEMU described a unique approach to virtualization chosen by QEMU, thanx to which QEMU, as the only virtualization tool can emulate different guest processor on different host processor. The closing talk by Lubo? Ko??o from Sun demonstrated a laptop setup using Xen virtual host hibernation to replace non-existent suspend-to-ram/suspend-to-disk feature in OpenSolaris kernel. our big thax is going to all speakers...
