This is a quick note to the Japan, China, Korea, and Taiwan OpenSolaris User Groups. Massive cross-posting here, but that's ok. It's only once. :) I live here in Japan, but I travel to China from time to time and I enjoy meeting with the China OSUGs. And I have been to Korea once, and I had a great time meeting some of the Korean OpenSolaris developers. Hopefully, I'll get to Taiwan soon. So, I just wanted to make sure that everyone in Korea, China, and Taiwan knew that if they ever came to Japan for any reason, please let us know. We'd love to meet you. You are more than welcome to stop by for a beer and a talk. And we'd love to know what you are doing in your respective countries with OpenSolaris and other FOSS software as well. Here in Tokyo there is a Japan OpenSolaris User Group and a Tokyo OpenSolaris User Group, and some of us participate in the Tokyo Linux User Group as well. TLUG is quite big and open and international, and it is really cool to see so many people visit them from around the world. And there are other FOSS communities in Tokyo that some of us hang out in. It would be interesting to see what kinds of development and community issues we all share in common here in East Asia. Perhaps we could even collaborate on some projects in the future? Who knows ... :) All OSUGs listed here: http://opensolaris.org/os/community/advocacy/usergroups/ug-leaders/ Best, Jim -- Jim Grisanzio, Sr. Program Manager, OpenSolaris Engineering http://blogs.sun.com/jimgris/ From Jim.Grisanzio at Sun.COM Mon Nov 10 08:44:59 2008 From: Jim.Grisanzio at Sun.COM (Jim Grisanzio) Date: Tue, 11 Nov 2008 01:44:59 +0900 Subject: [ug-shosug] proposal: osug-leaders list Message-ID: <4918650B.6050009@sun.com> hey, guys ... I'd like to open a new list for OSUG leaders -- osug-leaders at opensolaris.org -- with each OSUG choosing one person to represent their group on the list. Here's why: As the OSUG community grows larger it's getting difficult to reach everyone for important issues. For instance, we have some new resources for new OSUG kits and other items that we'd like to send soon, and we'll need to communicate with leaders in a focused way so these things can be distributed efficiently. There will be a few Sun people working on this, and they'll be on the list, too. Also, as we update the site and migrate the OSUGs to their new status as equal to Communities and Projects (see my previous mails on this), I'll need to talk to the leaders of each group frequently. I won't be able to ping all 80 lists like I do now, and when the numbers grow to 100 or 200 I'll be totally buried. The OSUGs hold the largest number of people in the community, and we expect these numbers to grow significantly in the coming year. So, a leaders list seems needed at this point. Once the OSUG leaders are on this new list they can use it to communicate with other OSUG leaders around the world to share ideas and such, but the immediate need is logistical. As new OSUGs come online, I will automatically subscribe the leaders to the leaders list as I create their projects and group lists. Cool with all that? If so, I'll start the process by adding a leader column to the OSUG grid to list the name of each group's leader. This way, everyone knows who represents each group and there's no confusion. Now, OSUGs have multiple leaders, of course, and they are welcome to join the list, but for the purposes of this I need at least one leader from each OSUG on the list to represent their group. Who shall I list as leaders in your groups on this grid: http://opensolaris.org/os/community/advocacy/usergroups/ug-leaders/ Let me know off list. Also, if you are a leader that I can list on that leaders grid, please also subscribe on the osug-leaders list: http://mail.opensolaris.org/mailman/listinfo/osug-leaders The OSUG leaders have to be on the new leaders list so we can communicate with you about the new kits we are sending out. We need the leaders on one list since there are so many groups now. See Teresa's note here http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=83223&tstart=0 if you are interested in the new kits ... Jim
