This is my understanding of the discussion we had at our meeting last week.
Some said they feel we cannot have the same kind of user group we have had because we can no longer have Solaris developers come and give presentations on OpenSolaris features that are being developed and are not yet released. I'm not sure that's completely true. So far people are still posting design documents for review on various OpenSolaris project mailing lists. We are all invited to read, ask questions, and comment on these designs. Many OpenSolaris user groups thrive in places where they do not have access to Solaris engineers. We could look at their mail archives and see what they do at their meetings.
Several people noted how much fun the Arduino and Roomba demonstrations were, and it was noted that Margaret brought her robot cat once and Larry has a Sun Spot. These things drew a lot of interest. Should we change the meetings to focus on these types of activities?
If you want to continue to have a meeting that is focused on OpenSolaris, we could do that. Perhaps we want to shift emphasis from features under development to using released features or using other apps on OpenSolaris. We could do this on our own, or we could join with an Oracle user group. I went to International Oracle Users Group Community (iouc.org), selected Independent Oracle Users Group (ioug.org), and then selected Join a Special Interest Group. This page says, "The goal of IOUG SIGs is to facilitate technical information sharing and peer-to-peer collaboration." They list several SIGs. So far, none for OpenSolaris. We could start an OpenSolaris SIG. Or we can have our own group that is independent from any Oracle user group.
What do you want to do?
